Our smallest swath belongs to the Makita EM2650LH, at just 16 inches. Multiply this by two, and you have the cutting swath (diameter). We measure the distance, in inches, from the center of the trimmer head to the cutter on the guard. The guard also houses the cutter/blade that keeps the line trimmed a certain length. Even the best weedeater peppered your legs with grass and weed “shrapnel”. Key Features of the Best Weedeaters Cutting SwathĪll string trimmers come standard with a guard to keep flying debris from hurting the operator. We also determine a “Value” which is more of a bang-for-your-buck calculation for the best weedeater. Furthermore, we determine fuel efficiency, tank runtime, time-work testing, and of course, price, and warranty. Ergonomics also plays a big role in our calculation. We take a look at items like key features, sound-pressure level, and weight. We’ve developed a points system, including multiple categories, with a possible total of 100. Each string trimmer is looked at in detail, used by multiple users, multiple times. The less we have based on subjectivity (opinion), the better. It is still clearly one of the best blowers for the money despite my initial misgivings, and I'm sure it will grow in popularity. In determining a ranking for the best weedeater, we want to stay as objective as possible. I'll keep this updated as I do more testing and pit more hours on the 8500. ![]() It's almost as potent while being quieter, more comfortable, and having a higher quality feel to it. My short take is that the 770 is a more well rounded machine. ![]() Also, my test was on wet grass and crab apples embedded in long, wet grass, not on leaves. The difference, to me, is smaller than the difference between the BR600 magnum and the 770 (which is interesting given that the specs say the 770 has abt 50 more CFMs than the stihl and that the redmax has abt 140more CFMs than the echo.)īear in mind that my 770 is fully broken in and the 8500 is brand new. 3, it is definitely more powerful, but not insanely so. 2, it's less comfortable and heavier feeling on the back than the 770 after wearing it for a while. Accessing the spark plug and the air filter on both units is extremely easy, and both units have almost identical sized dual-stage foam/paper air filter setups - the Echo on the side and the Redmax on the top.įired up the new redmax today. The Echo has a bigger muffler and a larger exhaust exit area. The Redmax tubes are lighter in weight than the Echo tubes.Īccessing the motor on the RedMax is easier. The tubes on the Echo are made of a thicker, more rigid plastic than those of the Redmax - the Redmax tubes are thinner and very flexible (you can squish them with your hand). The tubes on the 8500 are even wider than those on the 770, which has pretty wide tubes to begin with. ![]() Additionally the 770 has many more cooling slots in the backrest - further testing will reveal if the 8500 can cool the back as well. The quality of the plastic parts on the 770 is decidedly superior, and the straps and backrest are significantly more padded and thick. The 8500 is quite a bit taller and slightly deeper than the 770. The difference is negligible - again keeping in mind I haven't worn the 8500 for any length of time yet. The 8500 weighs (by my arm scale and my back scale) basically the exact same as the 770.
